blackberry and apple pie

for the pastry
175g flour
90g butter (or half butter and lard)

500g cooking apples peeled
100g sugar
250g blackberries a little milk and some caster sugar for sprinkling

Preheat the oven to 200ˇC/400ˇF/gas mark 6.
Mix the fat into the flour.
When it resembles fine breadcrumbs stir in enough water so that the dough can be formed easily into a ball.
Put in the fridge to relax for about 30 minutes.
Slice the cooking apples and put them in a buttered deep pie dish.
Add the sugar and the blackberries.
Roll the pastry out a little larger than the top of the dish.
Cut a strip from the pastry to act as a rim around the edge.
Wet the edges of the dish and press the rim of pastry in place you can pinch the pastry edge with your thumb and forefinger to seal if you wish.
Brush the rim with milk then fit the pastry over the top pressing down firmly around the edges. Cut the pastry to fit with a small knife then seal the edges firmly.
Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
Put the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes then reduce the heat to 190ˇC/375ˇF/gas mark 5 and continue baking for 25 to 30 minutes until the crust is golden.
Serve with cream or custard.
